February brings you a slate of new titles to be watched on HBO NOW. You will have a choice of both recent theatrical films and classic movies with a batch of original series premieres. For some reason, despite the fact that February is a Valentine’s month, you can find a lot of scary titles to select from.
The biggest premiere this month is Robert Rodriguez’s sci-fi action manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel. There’s also Conjuring universe entry Annabelle Comes Home, and the creepy suspense thriller Ma featuring Octavia Spencer as a deranged stalker. Another one that seems quite far from Valentine’s mood is Hostel.
If classic films are more up your alley, you can check out the excellent Albert Brooks comedy Defending Your Life. There’s also Denis Villeneuve’s dark drama Prisoners, starring Hugh Jackman as a father driven to unforgivably violent extremes by his grief over the abduction of his daughter. And if you are a fan of Daniel Craig as James Bond, you can check out Casino Royale and its follow-up Quantum of Solace.
Other titles that are worth mentioning include excellent Debra Granik’s Jennifer Lawrence-led drama Winter’s Bone, Coen Brothers lowlight Intolerable Cruelty, Bernardo Bertolucci’s controversial 1972 drama Last Tango in Paris, 1999’s Pierce Brosnan-starring take on The Thomas Crown Affair, Golden Globe-nominated Jennifer Aniston vehicle Cake and Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects.
