HBO Max, a relatively new kid on the block of streaming services, might be one of the best offers in the VOD market, considering its huge library of HBO shows and movies, Warner Bros. blockbusters, Studio Ghibli masterworks, acknowledged films from the Turner Classic Movies archives, and lots more. Its debut met generally positive reviews despite confusing some users with HBO Go and HBO Now branding, and annoying others for not being initially available on platforms like the Amazon Fire and Roku. All this prepared the users for what was about to come at the end of 2020.

A bold move from the service

The company rocked the boat of the movie industry late in 2020 when it announced that Wonder Woman 1984 and all of Warner Bros.' subsequent 2021 movie releases will premiere on HBO Max at the same time they debut in theaters for the foreseeable future as the Covid pandemic imposed restrictions on group gatherings indoors. What is more, as opposed to Disney+ practice, they will be available at no extra charge. Even though most of us would like to see such titles as Dune or Matrix 4 in the movie theater rather than on our home TV, at least we won't have to wait another year or two to see them. The plan is to put each of these first-run films on a 31-day clock before they leave HBO Max but we will have to wait to see how it actually works out.

On top of that, in addition to the already well-established HBO original TV slate, the list of HBO Max original shows and movies is growing fast, with 50 all-new titles set to arrive in 2021, along with returning favorites like Search Party, Friends Reunion Special, Green Lantern series, and a four-part miniseries of Zack Snyder’s Justice League later to be released as a single cut of the film, combining each episode.

A few more titles such as a sci-fi drama Reminiscence, James Wan’s thriller Malignant, Steven Soderbergh crime thriller No Sudden Move, and Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho -- have been announced to be coming to the service but their release dates have not been revealed yet.
