What is NFL?
The National Football League is the major professional American football organization in the world made up of 32 teams divide between two conferences: the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. Each conference is split into four geographically-based four-team divisions. A regular, 256-game season schedule is divided into divisional games, intra-conference games and inter-conference matches. The crown of the competition is the Super Bowl – the NFL Championship final game.
A flash of history
The NFL is the premier league for American football. It started in 1920 under the name of the American Professional Football Association (APFA) as a regional league between Midwestern teams and slowly grew throughout the first half of the 20th century as the major outlet for professional football. In 1966, the NFL assimilated the rival American Football League with the first Super Bowl played at the end of that season thus cementing its status as the sole outlet for professional football in the United States.
Regular season schedule
NFL regular season matchups are determined according to a scheduling formula. Within a division, all four teams play fourteen out of their sixteen games against common opponents – two games (home and away) are played against the other three teams in the division, while one game is held against all the members of a division from the NFC and a division from the AFC in a rotating cycle (three years for the conference the team is in, and four years in the conference they are not in). The other two games are intra-conference games, determined by the standings of the previous year – for example, if a team finishes first in its division, it will play two other first-place teams in its conference, while a team that finishes last would play two other last-place teams in the conference. In total, each team plays sixteen games and has one bye week, where they do not play any games.
Below, you can find a week-by-week schedule of games until the end of 2018 (all times are given in Eastern Standard Time). Full schedule can be found here. You can click here to skip the table and keep reading on how to watch the NFL 2018/19 season.

Media coverage
Basically, the National Football League has television contracts with four American networks: CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC. In general, CBS broadcasts afternoon games in which the away team is an AFC team, and Fox carries afternoon games in which the away team belongs to the NFC. ESPN covers Monday night matches and NBC televises Sunday night games. However, the offensive of streaming media makes it easier to watch NFL and catch your games even if you don’t have a US-based cable subscription.
There are many TV and streaming options to watch NFL games. Those officially approved by NFL itself can be found here. If you are not into traditional pay-TV service, numerous streaming platforms available across many devices offer you a chance to watch live coverage of the games. Most of the channels with the right to broadcast NFL live games can be found on many streaming platforms. Services like SlingTV or DirecTV Now offer a full range of channels that stream NFL matches. Also, FuboTV (with the exception of ESPN) and Hulu with Live TV (no NFL Network here) can provide you with all necessary channels to go through the whole season.
A new addition to those is Amazon Prime which will stream most of Thursday night games. Amazon Prime Video is available on smartphones, tablets and many Net-connected devices including Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Google Chromecast, Nvidia Shield, many smart TVs and game consoles.
Another Amazon-based novelty is Twitch – the video game-centric streaming service which will stream 11 Thursday game matches broadcast by Fox and streamed via Amazon Prime Video. It is free to watch and does not require Amazon Prime subscription.
NFL Network
NFL Network is an American sports-oriented network which is owned by the National Football League and is dedicated to American football. It features coverage of preseason games, some live matches, previously recorded games, highlights, interviews and studio shows from around the NFL. As a part of NFL service, it gives you a total experience of everything that happens around the games.
CBS All Access
One of the networks which are available with Smart DNS Proxy is CBS All Access. It features large number of channels (including all those streaming NFL games) and is available on numerous devices and systems such as Apple TV, iOS devices, Android devices, Google Chromecast, FireTV, XBOX, PS4, Roku or Windows via its app. The service previously did not get you access to the NFL games, but this season it will let you watch NFL. Apart from NFL stream, you have access to thousands of episodes of popular shows, original series, Live TV and award-winning news programs.
The ultimate solution - NFL Game Pass
NFL Game Pass is the ultimate way to watch the 2018/19 NFL season with access to all matches both live and on-demand, 24/7 access to the NFL Network and tons of useful information on the most wanted American sport event. It is not exactly the cheapest solution but, with a new 4x monthly instalment plan is a convenient option for all hardcore American football fans who cannot afford to miss a single touchdown throughout the entire season.
How to go around geographical restrictions
As you are well aware, most of the US-based channels are geographically restricted to the territory of the United States. There are several ways to avoid geo-fencing forced by the channels. Virtual Private Network (VPN) opens a virtual tunnel to the server which is physically located in a given country thus making your own device appear as if it was actually present there. VPN traffic is also heavily encrypted which, on one hand makes your connection very secure and on the other, slows the connection speed.
Another way to circumvent the geo-location is Smart DNS. It is a sophisticated technology which in a simple and user-friendly way replaces the default DNS assigned by your ISP (giving away your actual location) and reroutes your traffic masking your location thus giving you access to otherwise unavailable websites. With no additional software needed, it can be set up in a few simple steps.
Go to Smart DNS Proxy website and:
-
Sign up for Smart DNS Proxy (if you haven’t done so already)
-
Using our VPN service connect to one of our US-based VPN servers or use our smart DNS servers to mask your location
-
Go to the site or service which you want to use for streaming (you may need to create an account with some of them in order to stream the games)
-
Enjoy NFL matchups!
Unfortunately, due to long span of the games, there are not many options to watch the NFL season for free. Some services (Amazon Prime Video or NFL Game Pass) offer a trial period but it is usually quite short (7 or 14 days) so it will not take you through the season. It may be used, however, to watch the Super Bowl clash on 3 February 2019. We will come back to this when the time comes.
Join Smart DNS Proxy and enjoy the whole world of sports and other available forms of visual entertainment waiting for you at the click of a mouse!
